Accessibility improvements at Biggleswade Station

Accessibility improvements at Biggleswade Station have been formally marked with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, celebrating the completion of new lifts and a footbridge that are already transforming how people travel.

Delivered as part of the Access for All programme, the scheme provides step free access to and between platforms, supporting disabled passengers, people with pushchairs, cyclists and those with luggage.

The station upgrades have been described as “potentially life changing”, helping passengers travel more independently and with greater confidence. Another key message from the project is that these improvements are not just about compliance, but about dignity, inclusion and opening up the railway to everyone.

The event brought together local dignitaries, representatives from Ivel Valley College and the Biggleswade Rail Access Network campaign group, alongside partners including Network Rail, Great Northern, Thameslink and Story Contracting.

Projects like this show how collaboration across the rail industry can deliver meaningful, lasting benefits for local communities and passengers alike.

Luke Durston, principal programme sponsor at Network Rail, said that delivering fully accessible stations is “one of the most important ways we can make the railway better for everyone”, helping step free travel become a realistic option for more passengers.

Carl Martin, accessibility lead for Great Northern and Thameslink, described the new lifts as “potentially life changing” for some disabled passengers, calling the upgrade fantastic news for a station used by nearly 900,000 people each year.

Ash Widdop, contracts manager at Story Contracting, said the Access for All scheme is a “brilliant example of true collaboration”, delivering lasting benefits for passengers.

Mark Tripp, chair of governors at Ivel Valley School and College, added that the improvements will allow students to “use the rail network to explore further and learn vital life skills”.
